Rodion Shchedrin, Russia's most distinguished living composer, wrote his splendid choral work The Sealed Angel to celebrate 1000 years of Christianity in Russia.
Communist rule was ending in his motherland as Shchedrin composed this highly evocative and atmospheric piece. Framed in the traditions of an Orthodox liturgy, The Sealed Angel is a moving tone poem that affirms the autonomy of both faith and art.
An exhibit of icons enhances the concert setting.
